Creating an Interaction in Your Online Course

You have already decided that you are ready for the author online and have organized your content. Now is the time to face the ultimate challenge of online learning – to be interactive!

Interaction with online courses is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you want the students to participate. This opportunity gives you the opportunity to learn to question and discuss the issues that arise during the course. On the other hand, as an instructor, you need to determine what level of interaction you need with the student – and build the courses accordingly.

For example, let me turn a wrong choice I made in a course written a year ago. As I wanted all participants, I required every student to send at least one message a week to the discussion group. In addition, two other messages were needed. Simple? Yes. But because I decided that my level of posting was on every post, I met 3 students each week – and that was just the minimum requirement! I soon discovered that I was answering an overwhelming message.

To decide what level of involvement is required, let's look at the 5 levels of the interactions you offer.

first Answer any email. At this level of interaction, every e-mail or conversation is read and answered. Beware. Although this may be effective at the beginning of the conversation, if there is little interaction, it will soon overflow and encourage students.

2nd Answer all n. This is a more rational view. Here you can decide to choose every fifth post and answer. There is a risk that he will miss his best posting or miss an important question.

3rd Answer 1 message per week per student. You can set the expectation of welcoming everyone, but only a weekly response. This results in an effective message to the listener's shoulders and not to any quick thinking.

4th We make provocative questions. This is a great way to start the debate. If you choose this route, you may decide not to participate in the discussion itself, but to summarize it at the end – or not.

5th Use help. It can be a teacher assistant, a mentor, a student who has taken part in the past, etc. You can also choose to separate the email type – for example, a person can cover technical issues while another manages course mechanisms and content issues.

Now that you have decided what level of participation you have, it's time to plan the exercises. We recognize that almost any type of workout that you use from face to face has an online partner. Be creative – and try your ideas. You can even ask for help from the instructors if you say: “We would do this and that for the lesson in an instructor-led course.

Keep in mind that the format of the course you create will help you determine your eligibility.

Here are some ideas for interactive exercises that contain different levels of interaction, so choose your favorites.

Votes and Surveys – Ask questions and summarize the results of the participants. The survey can be done with a survey tool or a multiple choice exam. It happens before and often. The first survey could be the type of computer participants, the way to connect to the Internet and their computer literacy skills. it gives you feedback and gives them the "average" listener profile.

Go and do – Give me an assignment to be offline. Then ask them to come back and use another technique (thinking, chatting, summarizing) to report on their activities.

Read and Respond – Give students an article, a set of websites or other tasks. Then ask them to write a short reaction paper based on their reading.

Reflection – Ask each student to use their personal note to reflect on reading / group discussions.

3-Word Summary – Ask each student to summarize their thoughts in three words in the discussion group. Others may ask for clarification.

Teams – Create teams with small teams. Then ask one team person to summarize the subject of the larger debate.

Office Work Time – You can use weekly working hours to chat. Just tell everyone when you get in and wait for the questions. Alternatively, you may choose to provide a talk time for a small group or group of students, either to stimulate multiple interactions or what would be the overwhelming interaction.

Expert Panel – Inviting one or more experts to participate in a live event, such as a video conference or audio conference. Ask the audience. Then continue the discussion with the discussion group. If possible, ask the experts to take part in the discussion.
